Vineland man charged with insurance fraud
VINELAND – A 63-year-old city man was charged with arson and insurance fraud after allegedly setting a fire to inflate an insurance claim, according to police.
Michael Bertonazzi of the 700 block of Yale Terrace was charged with filing a claim related to the damages at his relative’s residence at the Mainland Villas complex.
The South Main Road residence sustained flooding during a July 1 storm. During the cleanup, a contractor’s blower with a heating element caught fire prompting a fire department report, according to investigators.
Bertonazzi’s subsequent insurance claim sought compensation for damages, which investigators noted included an area of the residence that was not damaged by the fire from the blower, but one that police charge was set by Bertonazzi.
He was arrested Aug. 25 after a month-long investigation by city’s detective bureau, according to information released on Thursday.
Bertonazzi, who could not be reached for comment, is scheduled to appear in Cumberland County Superior Court on Oct. 20, according to the court’s criminal division records.
