Spotting Bad Investigators
Like any other business unfortunately, there are some ‘black sheep’ that are sullying the names of private investigators. We take pride in the work we do and the insurance investigation services that we provide, so we take special offense when people speak about bad experiences they’ve had with investigators. So we thought that we would try to mitigate the problem by providing some essential information that will help clients recognize bad investigators.
This should be the biggest red flag when you go to meet an investigator to discuss your case. Although many states don’t require investigators to gain a license to operate, it doesn’t mean that they are proper investigators. A licensed investigator puts in the hard work and the hours necessary to hone their investigative skills. So, always go with a licensed investigator over those who doesn’t have a license.
As a general rule, you should avoid hiring investigators that don’t have extensive experience being investigators. They will not have the technical skills and knowledge to investigate any case properly. With an investigation firm like ours, you never have to worry about this aspect.
Some PIs will suggest using some unsavory methods of learning the truth. That is never a good precedence, not to mention that the evidence that is gathered will never be admissible in the court of law.
A lot of investigators will give you a great deal, initially, but they will start charging you more as the investigation progresses. You should agree to the cost of the investigation before it begins and any good investigator will stick to that agreement.
The Gut Feel
When you meet the investigator for the first time, trust your instincts. Pay attention to subtle hints he or she may present to gauge if the investigator is the right person to handle the case or not.
The information above will help you determine if you are dealing with one of the ‘black sheep’ or one of the good ones. The distinction could mean the difference between a successful or failed investigation.
