Hiding Behind a Lie

You can hide behind a lie for a while, but you can’t hide from the truth forever. An Ohio man with a long arrest record tried to hide behind another man’s identity for nearly three years, but he was eventually caught lying to his physician and was arrested for receiving workers’ compensation benefits he did not deserve.

The 51-year-old man lied to his doctor and used a fake Social Security number and alias of another man to collect unearned injured workers’ compensation benefits. The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) Special Investigations Unit (SID) didn’t take kindly to the scam, so they finally tracked down the man who was wanted by police for numerous local arrest warrants issued against his real name. (In fact, this was his ninth arrest. Most of the other arrests involved drug and alcohol or traffic offenses.)

The fraudster pleaded guilty to one count of worker’s compensation fraud. He was sentenced to six months of community control or one year in jail if he violates probation. (The judge gave him credit for 41 days already served.)

The man who had been hiding from the law under a false identity for more than a year, was finally caught. Congratulations to the BWC SID for making Ohio workplaces safer by preventing this criminal from diverting funds needed to support workers who are legitimately injured.
