COLUMBUS — The owner of a Fairfield County excavating company has admitted to falsifying documents about his workers’ compensation coverage when he submitted bid proposals to the city of Lancaster.

William Newell of Pleasantville pleaded guilty to workers’ compensation fraud last week in Fairfield County Common Pleas Court and has been ordered to pay $5,404 to the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation.

A bureau investigation of Newell found that when he submitted a bid proposal to the city, he claimed he did not have any employees or payroll. The investigation found Newell did have employees and that he underreported his payroll to avoid paying workers’ compensation premiums.

Newell received a six-month sentence for his plea on a charge of workers’ compensation fraud. The sentence was suspended for three years of community control.
